Earn Money in America 7 Methods
We’ve all heard the saying, The American Dream, but what does it really mean? It means that anyone who wants to succeed in America can do so with enough grit and elbow grease (and hard work, of course). But how do you make your dreams come true in America? You need to put in your share of work, of course! Here are seven ways you can earn money in America. Good luck!
- Search for jobs on Craigslist
- Bid on Freelance Work
- Consider Upwork
- Use Amazon Mechanical Turk
- Sell unused items on eBay, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace
- Rent out a room or your entire home on Airbnb
- Start an Etsy shop
If you don’t know where your money is coming from, how can you be sure that you have enough? It’s easier than ever to work for yourself these days, and jobs abound. But figuring out what jobs are legit can be a challenge; a simple search on Craigslist yields everything from babysitting gigs and odd-jobs (which may or may not pay well) to work at home opportunities that just don’t seem legitimate. Asking around your neighborhood might yield more results, but even that only goes so far. A quick online search reveals hundreds of opportunities. But which ones are actually legit?
The first step is to work on building up your portfolio and landing a few clients—and that’s where sites like Upwork can be helpful. Freelance marketplaces like these provide you with opportunities not only as an independent worker, but also as a way to meet clients and other freelancers who will be valuable contacts down the road. You never know when you’ll need help marketing your services or filling out a contract, and when it comes time for new business, they could very well come knocking at your door. Best of all? Your reputation is already established. Clients tend to pay more if they know they can count on you—after all, you have nothing left to prove. If you have a solid background and skill set, Upwork is an excellent way to earn some money online. You can find all sorts of freelance jobs on there; just make sure you read the fine print, so you know exactly what you’re signing up for. (For example, I’ve had clients tell me they didn’t think they were signing up to write for a porn site—but that’s what they ended up doing!) It pays well under most circumstances and, if you work hard at it, can be quite lucrative. Check out my post about it here. Good luck!
Amazon Mechanical Turk (M Turk) is a crowdsourcing Internet marketplace enabling individuals and businesses (known as Requesters) to coordinate the use of human intelligence to perform tasks that computers are currently unable or unwilling to do. It is one of several sites that emerged from what has been dubbed 'crowdsourcing'. Workers on M Turk typically receive payment for their services in Amazon gift cards and can choose from thousands of tasks. These can be small tasks that pay a few cents or longer jobs that pay tens of dollars and require a commitment over several days. That being said, there's not much you have to buy from Amazon, since you'll be raking in money faster than you spend it!
You can turn unused items into cash by selling them on Craigslist, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Sites like these offer free classified ads that you can use to sell your old video games, DVDs, CDs, and other items. Many times a seller will require that you have original packaging and instructions. This is especially true of video games, as they are often expensive. You may also be able to sell your used electronics online on Amazon or eBay—you just have to search for what you want. It's always worth it to check out your local Facebook Marketplace as well!
If you have extra space and could use a little extra cash, rent out a room on Airbnb. If you live near a university or business district, consider listing your home during summer and winter breaks when students or business travelers are looking for places to stay. In fact, about half of all Airbnb hosts have hosted for more than six months, indicating that if you're offering a desirable place with all-day demand, you can do quite well with hosting. For example, if you live in San Francisco and regularly host guests at your place so that it never hits available on Airbnb's platform (that is, it's constantly booked), then you might be able to make up to $547 per week during peak times like a convention. One of my favorite ways to earn money is by starting an Etsy shop. It’s super simple, and you don’t need any special training or a huge capital investment like you would with a brick-and-mortar store. The great thing about selling on Etsy is that it’s a social marketplace as well as an ecommerce platform—your customer base isn’t just made up of shoppers, but also people who can connect with you and spread word of your work. Although Etsy started out for handcrafted goods, there are now over 200 categories, ranging from jewelry and clothing to paintings and digital downloads. Whatever your talent is, I guarantee someone out there wants what you create!
